Cheat on this step and look for a rose that will not live up to its potential. Every time you look at it you will think, "Should have dug a better hole." Who needs a big "should have" in the yard? If digging a hole is not an option, your domain maybe the container garden or a raised bed,
For those of you back challenged (I am a member of this tribe) think children. Maybe you can snag one to help? Then there are husbands. Yes, we do work our way down to the bottom of the list so fast. Boyfriends who are still eager to please are helpful here. Of course, paying someone maybe the way to go. If you have to go solo on this one, my recommendation is dig when the soil is pretty dry but not rock hard (for most of us this means about 4 days after a rain) and do it in parts. Dig with your legs not your back and, if need be, take a seat on the ground and scope out the last bits of dirt with a small can. And, if you have a lot of roses to plant, take it in phases and dig some of the wholes before you even go to the nursery.
