Lagerfeld RoseLagerfeld Rose is a very tall grandifora with long sculpted blooms. Its tightly tapered delicate buds do not even begin to suggest the generous size of the ultimate flower.
When the new outer petals unfold, they are blushed light green at their base, and a very red pink covers the edges and fades into the center of the petal over an ivory like base color. When first open, the blooms have a pink hue which turns into a light mauve. As the petals age, they continue to lighten until they are, in their last days, a pink tinged white. What is fun about these blooms is their tendency to wing-out. Some of the outer porcelain petals seem to have mind of their own and point straight away form the core of its flower. There is also something Heathcliff-on-the-Moors and continuously romantic about Lagerfeld. Although it is a very large shrub and its sheer volume suggests strength, it seems vulnerable. Pests and black spots seem to be an issue. Lagerfeld needs warmth; however, unrelenting heat can quickly bleach the lovely blush from its blooms and parch its bright green leaves. That said, towering mauve grandifora romantic visions are not common, and for the experienced gardener or one who is willing to faithfully tend a special rose, Lagerfeld would be a substantial romantic addition to any rose garden.
