Rose Pests
Insects
Rose pests that are common insects include-
Aphids
Aphids are tiny bugs that tend to mass on your roses young rose buds. Generally green in color, some aphids are red. Aphids are most prevalent in the spring.
Ants and aphids have a symbiotic relationship. If you see a lot of ants around your rose bushes, aphids are generally there too. Ants fend of aphids’ enemies and like to eat aphid excretion.
Thirps
Early signs of thrips are in your roses are rose petals flecked with brown spots. Heat loving thirps can fly and prefer white and light pastel colored roses. Thirps are tiny and almost microscopic. One way to try to see them is break open your roses blossoms and shake the petals loose on a white cloth. Look for quick movements on the cloth.
Spider Mites
Small webs on the underside of your roses leaves, especially on the bottom leaves, are signs your bush has mites. Also, dried out looking leaves are another sign. The mites like to suck the water out of the leaves. Mites are really tiny spiders. They love heat, humidity and poor air circulation.
Getting Rid of Pesty Insects
The best defense is healthy soil and disease resistant roses or roses that thrive in your planting zone.
Another option is spraying roses. Be sure to consider the environment your roses are in and if they are close to edible plants. Follow instructions on any spray carefully.
Spraying—
One option used by rose gardeners, especially in the early Spring, is the use of neem oil, which is often used as an organic insecticide, and can help tremendously in your garden.
